WAESOL Board Nominations for 2012

Below are the WAESOL Board nominees for 2012 and their biographical statements. If you are a WAESOL member, you may vote Yes or No or No vote for each nominee via the pull-down menu, or write in the name of your own nominee (who must be a WAESOL member as well) under each position. Please vote only once. All votes are anonymous.

From WAESOL Constitution
The Executive Board shall consist of five officers, the Past President, and eight members-at-large ... who are broadly representative of the various areas of interest of the members. At least one of the members-at-large shall represent the area of the state beyond Puget Sound. The eight members-at-large shall serve two year terms; four new members-at-large will be elected each year.

  • Naomi has been a Washington State K-12 ELL teacher for the past eleven years, an instructional coach for two, and a high school Careers with Children mentor in the Auburn School District. She is a National Boards Candidate and is completing Tier III GLAD coach training. She has also been WAESOL’s TESOL Advocacy Day representative for Washington State for four years and WAESOL Treasurer for three. She has lived in the Bonney Lake area with her husband and two daughters for the last 19 years.

  • Lina Older works at Highline Community College as an ESL (English as a Second Language) / ABE (Adult Basic Education) / GED (General Education) / I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) Instructor. She has been at Highline since October 2007. She also works at Kaplan International as an Instructor of Grammar, Pronunciation and Survival English. She is involved in a program at Highline called CCID (Community Colleges for International Development, Inc.) where she works with students from other countries in a situation similar to being a host family by introducing them to the American culture. She is the Faculty Advisor for the newly formed club "K-Pop Dance Group." She has her Masters in Education. Her cultural background is Korean, German and Irish.

  • Jamila is an ESL Instructor at North Seattle Community College. She has been teaching ESL, ABE and computers in the Seattle Community College District for ten years. Currently, she is working with immigrants and refugees, but she has also worked with international students for two years in Barcelona, Spain and for 4 years at the ELS Center at Seattle University. She completed graduate studies in TESOL while teaching and received her masters in TESOL from Seattle Pacific University in 2007. As a professional, she believes it is her responsibility to advocate for the educational interests of her students. Her professional interests include college transition, advanced writing, andragogy, and faculty professional development.

  • Bevin has served as member-at-large on the WAESOL board for 4 years, and she has been very involved in the planning of the last three conferences, including this year's Tri-TESOL. She has also had the pleasure of serving as Publishers’ Liaison for 3 of those years. Bevin received her BA in Linguistics from Miami University and her MA-TESL from Bowling Green State University. She has been an ESL instructor for 8 years and currently teaches in the non-credit adult ESL program at Highline Community College, where she is also Department Coordinator. She enjoys helping students reach their educational and personal goals by providing a challenging, yet supportive classroom environment.

  • Jodi is currently a high school ELL and Spanish teacher in the Northshore School District. Jodi has a BA in Spanish and Political Science and a MA TESOL. Early in her career, she worked within nonprofit organizations as a community organizer and an advocate of civic participation. This is her 4th year working with ELL students in Northshore Schools and throughout her teaching experience, has worked with ELL students within the junior and senior high school level, as well as adults in community ESL classroom settings. She is currently finishing a 2 year term on the WAESOL board as a member at large and is the WAESOL World Quarterly Editor. She is a dedicated member of WAESOL and looks forward to continuing to serve on the board.

  • Yukari is an Associate Professor in the Department of Language, Literacy, and Special Education at Central Washington University where she teaches multicultural education and TESL related classes. Her interests are Asian American students' school life, immigrant students' English language learning, and pre-service teachers' dispositions towards diversity.

  • Joan Johnston Nelson has been engaged in English language teaching since 1986. Since her first experience teaching in Taiwan more than 25 years ago, she has taught in a wide variety of teaching situations at all levels from kindergarten through adult literacy and academic English. Joan has taken leadership roles in curriculum development and teacher training in both the adult and k-12 settings. She is currently teaching at Gonzaga University and is completing her doctoral dissertation through Washington State University on elementary ELL interaction in the mainstream and sheltered settings. Her passion is for working with students on the margins, especially in the refugee communities and her own Native American community.

  • Anne has enjoyed serving the WAESOL community for the past two years as a member-at-large. She has been teaching at the Intensive American Language Center at Washington State University for the past 6 years, while also serving on the Faculty Development, Educational Technology, Scholarship, Faculty, Materials, and Hiring committees. Anne’s master’s is in TESL from the University of Idaho and she loves teaching students of diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures. On the weekends, Anne and her husband Samir have a booth at the Moscow Farmer’s Market selling authentic Egyptian food. She has found that serving on the WAESOL board has been rewarding on many levels and has felt honored to have had the opportunity to do so.
